At the very heart of every political democracy is the right of citizens to participate in its democratic processes and the foundation of this process is the right to vote. Not only is this an undemanding way to participate in the governance of the nation but is also the most effective tool to strengthen the supreme democratic institutions – the Parliament and the State Legislatures.

This one right enables the circa 1.2 billion strong population of the world's largest democracy to elect circa 550 representatives to the Lok Sabha (530 from the States and 20 from the Union Territories). The sheer power of our collective number should highlight how this one right, granted to Indians under Article 326 of the Indian Constitution, can help us shape the destiny of our country. While to-date the 550 odd politicians in the center have been leading us, if we want we can NOW ensure that it is the 1.2 billion of us  who decide who will be sitting in the seats of power and how will they be legislating.

To ensure that we now have control over our future, WE need to take action NOW before the upcoming general elections of 2009.
